Driving with your rented motorcycle, scooter or car up Teide
Driving up Teide is a must! If you are a driving enthusiast you will find this roads absolutely amazing! Sometimes it feels like the best bends from some of the best racing tracks have been carefully arranged for a perfect driving experience. On top on all this, you will go through some out of this world landscapes, always changing, always fascinating.
There are 5 main points you should reach before going up Teide with a car or motorbike. Among local bikers the examples bellow are the classic and most popular driving routes for going up Teide National Park and we have put them together so you don’t have to struggle finding them.
Tenerife South: Vilaflor, Chio
Tenerief North: Arafo, La Laguna, Orotava
ROUTE 1 Tenerife South –> Vilaflor –> Teide (via Arona)
A scenic route and one of the easiest ones. Ideal for novice motorbike riders and equally exciting for more experienced riders. Before renting a motorcycle in Tenerife make sure you will choose something that will be comfortable while going downhill on the way back.
ROUTE 2 Tenerife South –> Vilaflor –> Teide (via Granadilla)
A very beautiful motorcycle route in Tenerife, but one of the hardest. The road towards Vilaflor can be quite hard even for experienced drivers. There are sections where you will encounter narrow roads, tight bends and low visibility. If you decide to go on this route, you will definitely enjoy it!
ROUTE 3 Tenerife South –> Vilaflor –> Teide (San Miguel)
A scenic motorcycle route in Tenerife, it can be approached by novice as well, but please do it with caution. Going up the road towards San Miguel you might encounter some heavy traffic, depending on the time of the day. From San Miguel towards Vilaflor you will find yourself driving on some beautiful bends and in most cases you will be alone on the road. This Tenerife driving route can be a fantastic choice even for experienced riders.
ROUTE 4 Tenerife South –> Chio –> Teide
Maybe one of the most scenic motorcycle routes in Tenerife!! Most of the route you will have a clear view of the ocean, La Gomera island and Pico del Teide. The route is accessible for all riders. One of the highlights of this route will be the drive through the lava field. Make sure you get a comfortable motorcycle or you are prepared to handle the continuous shocks.
ROUTE 5 Tenerife North –> Candelaria –> Teide (via Arafo)
If you haven’t been impressed by Route4 or you found the tarmac a bit harsh, you will definitely find this as the most scenic motorcycle routes in Tenerife!! Very similar to Route4 but you don’t get the bad tarmac on the downside you don’t get to drive through the lava field either. Hard to choose so better do them both 🙂 On this driving route you will be amazed by the beautiful forest, fantastic views of Mount Teide and Puerto de la Cruz. We believe this route can be approached by both novice and experienced riders.
ROUTE 6 Tenerife North –> La Laguna –> Teide
A tranquil drive that will take you through the beautiful forest route of Tenerife North. Once you pass the forest you have the chance to drive your car or motorcycle above the clouds. Beautiful views of Mount Teide and all of the North will accompany you for most of your drive. We believe this route can be approached by both novice and experienced riders.
ROUTE 7 Tenerife North –> Orotava –> Teide
A classic motorcycle route among Tenerife bikers usually used for going down towards Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz. It is maybe one of the least interesting routes ones but often being used as a downhill route.
Costa Adeje –> Teide –> La Laguna –> Candelaria –> Tajao –> El Medano
A very nice route for you to enjoy on your rented motorcycle in Tenerife. This route starts in the South of the island and it will be a pleasure for both novice and experienced riders.
The tour is @200km long and it will take you at least half a day, i am trying to take in account sigh-seeing stops, food stops and landmark visiting. Depending on your own preferences this tour will take longer.
You can easily start your ride at @ 1pm and head towards the “Teide National Park”, the road will take you through some beautiful pine forests and depending on the season you will be above the clouds. Once you reach the National Park you will be surrounded by lava fields and the beautiful mount Teide will sit in the middle.
Up you will find a few restaurants and bars where you can enjoy the views while having something cold to drink.
On your way towards La Laguna you will pass by the Teide Astronomical Observatory and you will slowly enter the beautiful Pine Forest. In La Laguna you can spend a few hours wondering in the city center which also houses old historical buildings and architecture.
Candelaria is a beautiful city by the ocean with a beautiful square and tall sculptures of the nine aboriginal kings of Tenerife.
If you are hungry, stop in Tajao, it is a famous fish village and you can try some fresh fish, sea food and local cuisine.
El Medano will be a very nice place to spend the evening, relax by the harbor and watch the sunset.
Costa Adeje –> Teide –> La Orotava –> Puerto de la Cruz –> Garachico –> Los Gigantes
A beautiful route for you to enjoy on your rented motorcycle in Tenerife. This route starts in the South of the island and it will take you over the mountain and towards cities filled with history and beautiful architecture
The tour is @200km long and it will take you at least half a day, i am trying to take in account sigh-seeing stops, food stops and landmark visiting. Depending on your own preferences this tour will take longer.
You should start your ride not sooner than 10.30am and head towards the “Teide National Park”, the road will take you through some beautiful pine forests and depending on the season you will be above the clouds. Once you reach the National Park you will be surrounded by lava fields and the beautiful mount Teide will sit in the middle.
Up you will find a few restaurants and bars where you can enjoy the views while having something cold to drink.
On your way towards La Orotava you will start going down the mountain, occasionally the road will be steep and quite often you will reach a tight corner. The city of La Orotava deserves a bit of your time so feel free to explore it a bit.
Puerto de la Cruz is the perfect place to enjoy your lunch and a walk on the beautiful streets. Finding a good restaurant is not hard, this place is renown for it’s quality and good service. The beach is within walking distance and if you are prepared you can even sunbathe.
In Garachico you can have a quick coffee by the ocean and a small desert in one of the many picturesque restaurants. It is a place filled with history and tales.
Towards Los Gigantes you will go through another twisty section half time you will be going uphill while the other half will be downhill. The tarmac is perfect and you will be able to enjoy your hired motorcycle.
The way back will take you on the coast of the ocean where depending on the time of the day you will be able to enjoy a beautiful sunset.
Costa Adeje –> La Laguna –> Anaga & Mercedes Forest –> Playa Benijo –> Playa Las Teresitas –> Tajao
A picturesque route that will take you and your hired motorcycle through some of the most beautiful forest roads in Europe. This route starts in the South of the island and it will start with a 50km stretch of highway.
The tour is @200km long and it will take you at least half a day, i am trying to take in account sigh-seeing stops, food stops and landmark visiting. Depending on your own preferences this tour will take longer.
You should start your ride at @11am and head towards La Laguna where you can spend a few hours wondering in the city center which also houses old historical buildings and architecture.
From here you will go straight into the virgin forests of, in this area the weather is very unstable i strongly recommend to check the conditions before you hit the road.
The roads in the forest are narrow and tight, on the side of the roads you can find wet leaves. Extreme caution is advised. Depending on the motorcycle, this section will be difficult on your arm, some section will go downhill and it will be quite steep.
Once you feel comfortable on the road, you will encounter some of the most beautiful scenery on the island. Playa Benijo is a true wonder and you will definitely enjoy the place.
If you are in the mood for some sunbathing, head towards the famous Playa Las Teresitas. Although it is another 40min drive most of it going downhill on tight corners you will enjoy the restaurants and the food you will find there.
For dinner, i strongly recommend a stop in the beautiful village of Tajao. Fresh fish, sea food and typical Canarian food is all you will find 🙂

A fantastic route to enjoy the sunset. Make sure you reach the viewing point 20min before sunset. You will have an amazing experience and one of a kind.
On your way down make sure you are well dressed, depending on the season the temperature can drop quite a lot.
