Renting a motorcycle in Tenerife while on your vacation will definitely make your stay here on the Island of Tenerife a memorable one.
Being a biker you will enjoy Tenerife much more while riding your rented motorcycle. The driving experience and the windy roads will uncover the wild scenery of Teide National Park or the virgin forests of Anaga.
Tenerife and all the Canary Islands are following the based on the European driving laws and are just the same as mainland Spain but you should always be careful for those holiday drivers
Not once has it happened to run across a Brit driving on the wrong side of traffic or lost tourists that forget to turn the signal while running over you. Although rare occurrences you should always watch yourself while riding the motorcycle in Tenerife; or anywhere else for that matter.
The driving style of the locals is very relaxed; you might actually get annoyed by this. Signaling is not a habit in Tenerife but most of the drivers are very careful and unlike other places they will actually see you, make room or wait for you to pass. The number of motorcycle accidents caused by car drivers is at its minimum here; in the years I lived in Tenerife I can only recall one.
I applaud the taxi drivers!! In Tenerife the taxi drivers respect and care about the bikers, they will make room for you to pass as soon as they spot you in their mirror.
Driving your rented motorcycle in the South of Tenerife at dawn or during the night can sometimes be extra dangerous due to drunk drivers and drunk pedestrians …. Please be extra careful!!
The police … at first sight they always wear an angry look but they are always helpful and kind; unless you do something naughty. The speed limits are well enforced by them and you never know when or where you will come across a mobile radar vehicle, my advice is to keep it within the limits max +10km/h. The police regularly organize filters, especially in the South of Tenerife where the main targets are drunk drivers and drugs; try to stay away from alcohol or drugs and you will be fine.
The roads are beautiful, the scenery is breathtaking and in most cases the tarmac is good. Up in the Teide National Park you will find some sections where the tarmac is slightly damaged and you will have to drive slower, more focused and depending on the bike you ride in discomfort. The wet tarmac can be very dangerous, it rarely rains, it is never washed and it is impregnated with oil that will immediately rise to the surface and reduce the grip of your tires.
The twisty roads can sometimes be deceiving, the style bends is much sharper than the ones you might be used to and I do recommend driving slower than you would normally do, at least until you get used to the place.
Overall, I strongly recommend you to rent a motorcycle in Tenerife, enjoy the roads, explore the beautiful places and make your vacation memorable. Be a biker, be careful and always expect the worse.
